Cori Gauff (Coco) is an American professional tennis player originally from Atlanta, Georgia. She plays right-handed (double-handed backhand). Gauff made history as the youngest-ever female finalist in the US Open singles event, and the youngest ever to qualify for Wimbledon. She competed and won the 2018 Junior Roland Garros (French Open), and the 2018 Orange Bowl singles (Girls, 18 and under). On July 1, 2019, she defeated 5x champion Venus Williams in the first round at Wimbledon.
Gauff was born on March 13, 2004, in Atlanta, Georgia. Her mother, Candi Gauff (Odom), ran track at Florida State University, and her father, Corey Gauff, played basketball at Georgia State University. she has 2 younger brothers, Codey and Cameron. The family moved back to Delray Beach, Florida, in order to give their daughter a better chance at a professional tennis career. Cori was 7 when the family moved to Florida. CAREER
Gauff began tennis lessons in the 2nd grade. Her dad, Corey, serves as her primary coach. A portion of her training took place at the New Generation Tennis Academy under coach Gerard Loglo. She’s also trained at Pompey Park in Delray Beach, Florida. At age 11, Gauff traveled to France’s Mouratoglou Academy to try out for their Champ Seed Foundation. She was selected by Patrick Mouratoglou. The foundation helps aspiring tennis players who lack the financial resources needed to advance their careers.
At age 13, Gauff made it all the way to the US open girl’s final (2017). Her International Tennis Federation (ITF) debut followed in May 2018. Gauff competed and won the French Open (girls singles) in June 2018. She won the Girls’ Doubles at the US Open (September 2018) alongside partner Caty McNally. Gauff closed out 2018 as the singles champion (Girls, 18 and under) at the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships.
Gauff made her Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) debut at the Miami Open in March 2019. She bested Caty McNally in the first round but lost to Russia’s Daria Kasatkina in the second. On June 27, 2019, she successfully qualified for Wimbledon’s main draw. On July 1, 2019, Gauff defeated 5x champion Venus Williams in straight sets to mark her grand slam debut. Due to the WTA age eligibility rule, Gauff is limited to the number of tournaments that she can participate in. Those rules were set in place to prevent burn-out and to ensure the well-being of players. Once Gauff turns 18 she can compete in as many events as she wants.
