17 years ago, a young and hip college romance took the silver screen and the country by storm. It not only made way for one of Bollywood’s favourite directors, Karan Johar, but also gave us a love story and a set of characters we can never forget. Whether it’s the fun banter between two best friends or tender moments of love, it’s a movie we can watch over and over. Wonder why? Well, “Kuch kuch hota hai, tum nahin samjhoge...” But with almost two decades behind us since this movie hit the screens, we wonder where the star cast of the film is today. Let’s take a look...
Shah Rukh Khan
He played the C-O-O-L and popular Rahul Khanna, who was a hit with the ladies in college and one of the most adorable father figures we’ve seen. Shah Rukh Khan is still as cool as ever (sans the funky neckpiece) and is undoubtedly the modern day king of romance in Hindi Cinema. What’s more, if all the cute photos of and posts about his kids Aryan, Suhana and AbRam are to be believed, he’s quite the super dad too!
Kajol
From the tomboyish Anjali to the sorted and grown up one, Kajol’s character transformed and how! She gave this character, as well as its many shades, her all. And even today, she infuses every character with life and what’s more, her recent transformation into a fashion forward and glamorous mother and actress is nothing short of awesome!
Rani Mukerji
She played the gorgeous and sensitive Tina, who had boys swooning with every step she took. She’s just as beautiful and earthy even today and she’s proved that she can pack a mean punch and bring the bad guys to their knees with her latest release, Mardaani.
Salman Khan
As the loveable Aman besotted by Anjali, Salman Khan showed off his softer side as well as his romantic avatar. Today, the rough and tough superstar has men wanting to be like him and women wanting to be with him. Add to that, he’s not only bringing the macho man to screen with his next film, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, but is also all set to cast a romantic spell with his Diwali outing, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Wow!
Sana Saeed
The feisty and precocious little Anjali from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is all grown up now! A diva in her own right, she brought the hotness and the sass on screen with her role as Tanya in Student Of The Year in 2012. And we can’t wait to see what she does next.
Farida Jalal
As the puja-loving and easy going Dadi, Farida Jalal added the fun element to the film while also imparting her wisdom and being instrumental in bringing Rahul and Anjali together in the end. Today, she continues to play a wise matriarch in a number of television shows and films, her last big screen appearance being in Student Of The Year as Abhi’s (Sidharth Malhotra) grandmother.
Anupam Kher
From being the bumbling professor Malhotra to having his own acting school, veteran actor Anupam Kher surely has a fair number of feathers to his cap. His histrionics in the film left us in splits and continue to do so, as he graces the stage and the screen with his talent. But we can’t help but say how “Kweet” he was in the movie!
Reema Lagoo
From being the caring and understanding mother to Anjali to becoming a renowned and respected actor in Marathi as well as Hindi cinema and television, Reema Lagoo has mastered the art of playing the quintessential mother.
Himani Shivpuri
As the matronly Riffat Bi, Himani Shivpur not only showed college girls the old school way to flirt, but also gave us a character to remember and cherish. She continues to bring her acting talent to the fore, with bit parts in movies as well as plum roles in television shows.
Archana Puran Singh
None can forget Archana Puran Singh as the saucy English teacher, Miss Braganza, who was the delight of men and boys alike. She’s still a delight today as she brings her charm and booming laughter to many a comedy show where she plays judge to new comedic talent.
Johnny Lever
Funny man Johnny Lever had us in peals of laughter as the Queen Elizabeth worshipping camp manager, Mr Almeida. He continues to be a fantastic source of comic relief even today, with his quirky roles in films like Housefull 2 and Entertainment.
Neelam
She played the peppy VJ Neelam who was little Anjali's favourite TV personality. She's now a hot favourite in the jewellery circuit with her own brand of jewels, while also enjoying her married life with actor Samir Soni.
Parzan Dastur
After giving us the immortal dialogue, "tussi jaa rahe ho? Tussi na jao!" Parzan Dastur has grown leaps and bounds from being the cute little Sardar in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to assisting Karan Johar on Student Of The Year.
Special appearances – Farah Khan and Nikhil Advani
It's a little known fact that Karan Johar's close friends Farah Khan and Nikhil Advani made blink and miss appearances not once but twice in the movie! They played Rahul and Anjali's college friends who laugh at Anjali's failed attempt at being girly, as well as playing a couple on The Neelam Show. Today, they are both successful directors in their own right. While Farah just delivered a hit with Happy New Year, Nikhil is all set with two releases this year - Hero and Katti Batti.
