We can announce that Dave Bautista, star of Dune and Guardians of the Galaxy, has found his next big-canvas action film, a post-apocalyptic adventure drama called Afterburn. This one also stars Oscar candidate Samuel L. Jackson (The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Django Unchained), and takes place ten years after a solar flare wipes out all of humanity’s technology.
Jake, played by Bautista, is an ex-soldier who now works as a treasure hunter for wealthy clientele, finding priceless artifacts from the old world. His most recent task is to work with Drea, a freedom warrior, to retrieve the Mona Lisa before an insane warlord does.
The film is an adaptation of the same-titled Red 5 comic/graphic novel series. Jackson is set to portray Valentine, the freedom fighter, in a supporting role. Matt Johnson (Into The Blue) wrote the original script, which Nimrod Antal (Control) revised.
The project is being released for sale by Black Bear and CAA Media Finance in advance of the European Film Market the following week. It is one of the largest-budget new packages and is scheduled to begin production soon. In Europe, principal photography is scheduled to begin in April, and casting is currently ongoing.
J.J. Perry, who most recently completed filming Lionsgate’s The Killer’s Game, which starred Bautista as well, will helm the picture. Perry is well-known for his work as a stunt coordinator and second-unit director on the John Wick and Fast & Furious films.

Neal H. Moritz (from the Fast and Furious franchise), Toby Jaffe (from Total Recall), and Steve Richards (from the Sherlock Holmes series and The Matrix trilogy) are the producers for the Original Film, while Endurance Media provides the financing. Additionally, Bautista will produce under Dogbone Entertainment. CAA Media Finance handles domestic sales, while Black Bear handles overseas sales.
The producers have been working on the plot for a long time; they attempted to put it into production back in 2018. After six years, it has new life and distinct components. Under his Dogbone imprint, Bautista’s next films include Dune: Part Two and My Spy: The Eternal City for Amazon. Jackson will soon be seen in The Garfield Movie and The Piano Lesson. He most recently starred in Argylle.
